Securing your computer and account
If you think your account might be compromised, or you want to secure your computer, follow these helpful tips.
TIP: If you're unable to access your account due to a compromise, here are some steps to recover your account and follow steps 1 through 5 to secure your computer.
1. Scan your computer for malicious software. For more information, go to our Security Software page.

Support Your account Security
Phishing websites and suspicious emails
Phishing scams are used to acquire sensitive personal information and can take many different forms. The most common types include posing as 'official' websites, suspicious emails and in-game messages.
Follow the steps on our guide to Securing your computer and account to make sure your account is secure. You should also consider enabling RuneScape Authenticator for an extra layer of security.
If your account has been hijacked, secure the account as soon as possible before getting in touch.
Fake Websites
Scammers will create fake websites that look official to collect sensitive player information. If you're asked to log in to a site that seems suspicious - Don't!
If you're unsure if a site is legitimate, you can check PhishTank to see if it's already been reported as a scam.
We also recommend enabling your browser's phishing filter to help identify malicious websites.
Google Chrome
Mozilla Firefox
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Suspicious Emails
Phishing emails will try and get you to reply and give up your personal information. They can range from enticing you with special offers like beta access, rare or free items or even threaten account suspension.
An early indicator of a fake email is simple grammatical and spelling mistakes.
The best and safest approach is to never reply to emails that ask for any personal information, especially if you have not gotten in touch with Jagex yourself.
If you receive a phishing email, please forward it on to [email protected]
Staff Impersonation
JMods & PMods will always have a crown next to their name in-game. If the crown is missing and they claim to be with Jagex, it's a phishing attempt.
Please report players you encounter who are impersonating staff so we can take action against them and consider using your ignore list so you can keep playing without receiving additional messages from them.

Posted 06 March 2012 - 04:39 PM
First thing I would like to say, RuneHints Databases have not been breached due to high levels of security. Any attempts other than allowed IPs get asked Strong Secure Questions only I know the answers to.
However due to other fansites still being attacked, hacked, and stolen data, we advise you to secure your accounts weather that is on RuneHints or any other fansite, we don't want you to loose your hard work due to a simple error.
Tips from RuneHints for you guys as of today.
Use a different email address for RuneScape, and use another for Fansites, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Make sure you bookmark RuneScape, if you can bookmark RuneScape in a folder and have many bookmarks for your most common links. This will save you accidentally clicking on a link leading to a stealing website. You can have a link for, forums, loyalty programme, clans, hiscore and the message centre, then you shouldn't need to click any URL's in any unexpected emails.
It is also advised that you keep a separate password for RuneScape and your emails, fansite, facebook, twitter etc accounts to keep your account safe.
At the end of the day, if you think you have a "scam" email, and are not sure, then we are free to help you out, just drop us an email when you can."
